Crypto ETF markets were broadly higher on May 21, led by strong gains across XRP- and Solana-related products, while Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs posted more modest performance. Spot Bitcoin ETFs were mixed, with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) rising 2.3% and ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) gaining 3.9%, while Fidelity’s FBTC and Grayscale’s GBTC declined modestly. Levered Bitcoin products underperformed relative to prior sessions, with the ProShares Ultra Bitcoin ETF (BITU) down 6.8% and the T-Rex 2X Long Bitcoin Daily Target ETF (BTCL) falling 5.5%, reflecting continued volatility in Bitcoin prices. Fund flows were negative overall for the category, led by roughly $61 million in outflows from IBIT and $10 million from FBTC.
Ethereum ETFs traded mostly higher as ETH stabilized above $2,100, with the iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) advancing 6.2% and Fidelity’s FETH gaining 16.4%. Levered Ethereum exposure saw significantly stronger moves, including the 2x Ether ETF (ETHU) up 26.9%, while covered-call and income-oriented strategies also outperformed, with ETTY climbing 44.1%. Despite stronger price action, flows remained relatively muted, though ETHA experienced approximately $31 million in daily outflows.
XRP ETFs delivered the strongest performance across the digital asset ETF landscape as optimism around XRP-related products continued to build. The Grayscale XRP Trust ETF (GXRP) surged, while leveraged funds posted even larger gains, including the Volatility Shares XRP 2X ETF (XRPT), which jumped 117.3%, and the Teucrium 2x Long Daily XRP ETF (XXRP), which rose. Canary XRP ETF (XRPC) also recorded positive net inflows of approximately $6.5 million during the session.
Solana ETFs also posted outsized gains, supported by improving sentiment toward Layer-1 blockchain exposure. The Bitwise Solana Staking ETF (BSOL) gained nearly 198%, while the Grayscale Solana Staking ETF (GSOL) rose 201.9%. Leveraged Solana products sharply outperformed spot-oriented funds, with the 2x Solana ETF (SOLT) climbing 393.2% and the leveraged SLON ETF advancing 381.0%, highlighting continued speculative demand for high-beta crypto exposure.
Cryptocurrency markets traded modestly higher early Friday, with total market capitalization rising 0.3% to $2.66 trillion as investors continued rotating into selective altcoins despite ongoing weakness in Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin traded near $77,215, down 0.5% over the past 24 hours and 4.0% over the week, while Ethereum slipped 0.3% to $2,121. Market leadership remained concentrated in alternative Layer-1 and infrastructure-related assets, with NEAR Protocol emerging as the strongest performer, surging 29.4% over the last 24 hours and 46.6% over the past week. ONDO also advanced 7.4%, while Polkadot and Internet Computer each gained more than 4%, reflecting renewed appetite for higher-beta blockchain ecosystems.
Within the Layer-1 segment, most major protocols traded modestly positive, including Solana, Avalanche, Hedera, and Cardano, suggesting improving sentiment outside of the two largest cryptocurrencies. DeFi markets were mixed but constructive overall, with Chainlink and Filecoin outperforming, while Uniswap continued to lag broader market performance. In the metaverse and gaming sector, Internet Computer led gains, while The Sandbox and Axie Infinity posted smaller advances. Conversely, privacy-focused cryptocurrencies experienced profit-taking after recent rallies, as Monero declined 4.5% and Zcash fell 3.4%. Toncoin and World Liberty Financial also traded lower amid continued weakness in speculative momentum names.
Compared with the May 21 evening session, market participation rotated away from prior leaders such as Hyperliquid and Sui and into NEAR, ONDO, and legacy Layer-1 protocols. Overall, market conditions continue to reflect selective risk appetite, with investors favoring mid-cap altcoins and ecosystem tokens while Bitcoin and Ethereum remain rangebound under broader macro uncertainty.
